How to Find Breakout Stocks on NSE (Step-by-Step)

A repeatable process for finding high-quality breakout stocks on NSE — covering price structure, volume, momentum, and risk management.

Finding a breakout is easy. Finding a breakout that follows through is hard. Here's the exact process serious traders use to filter NSE stocks for high-probability breakouts.

Step 1: Define the level

A breakout requires a level worth breaking. Look for:

  • 20-day high (short-term momentum)
  • 52-week high (long-term trend)
  • Multi-touch resistance (3+ rejections at the same price)
  • Consolidation range (Bollinger Band squeeze, ATR contraction)

Step 2: Demand volume confirmation

The single biggest filter for fake breakouts is volume. A breakout candle should print at least 1.5x the 20-day average volume — ideally 2x+. Without volume, the move has no conviction and usually fails within 1-2 sessions.

Step 3: Check momentum

RSI between 55-70 is the sweet spot. Above 70 = stretched, prone to mean reversion. Below 50 = no momentum. MACD histogram expanding is a strong confirm.

Step 4: Look at options flow

For F&O stocks, check if call OI is building at higher strikes on the breakout candle. Smart money writing puts and buying calls before a level breaks is one of the cleanest leading signals.

Step 5: Check sector strength

Stocks rarely break out alone. If the sector index is also breaking out (or trending strongly), the probability of follow-through doubles. Avoid breakouts in weak sectors — they're usually short-covering rallies.

Step 6: Manage risk

Stop-loss = below the breakout candle low (or 1 ATR). Target 1 = 1.5x risk. Target 2 = 3x risk. Trail with a 9-EMA on intraday or 21-EMA on swings.

Doing this for 3,000+ stocks

Manually applying these 6 steps to every NSE stock is impossible. That's why we built BreakoutNavigator — it runs all 6 filters every 60 seconds across all 3,363 NSE stocks and ranks signals by composite score. Try it free.
